What do you think of the boys name Espen?

I'm not really sure of the meaning, but a friend of my sister named her son that and I actually like it! Any opinions? The only set-back with me choosing that for my son, is that my husband keeps telling me it sounds too much like the channel ESPN.

I like the sound of Espen James for my son by the way (due in November)

What do you think of the boys name Espen?
Ham B and Shauna - it actually is a real name:

The meaning of the name Espen is God Bear

The origin of the name Espen is Scandinavian

But...

Info on this name: Also a created American name from the Television sports network ESPN.
Reply:I'm new to this Yahoo thing but stumbled across this thread. You might like to know that my name is Espen and I was *conceived* in Norway, but am not Norwegian. I am also 37 years old, so it has nothing to do with ESPN - That was Howard Stern's doing.

What did you end up naming your child? Report Abuse

Reply:Espen??? That's not a real name. It's just some made up nonsense. Don't torture your son by naming him some ridiculous word just because you think it sounds cool. He will live with the name for the rest of his life. How many times is he going to be asked "Espen is an unusual name, what does it mean?" Give the kid a break.
Reply:It reminds me of a tree...an aspen tree.

To be honest, that sounds too made up and too feminine for a boy. For a girl, it would be okay...not great but okay.

If you decided to name your child that, at least give him a nickname. He's the one who has to grow up with that name...not you...so give him one he can live with.

EMT
Reply:Its not my favorite choice. It reminds me of epsom salt.
Reply:I don't like it, but it's your choice not anyone else's. I'm really more into traditional names and not being a trendsetter....but I don't think it is a bad name that would prevent the kid from having a lot of difficulty in like (be prepared for him to be called Espy or ESPN, but those aren't bad nicknames).

Choose whatever makes you happy and everyone else will deal with it.
Reply:How about EPSON after the printer ?????
Reply:I really like it, it is cute and unique but not like over the edge unique. I think your son will really enjoy it, and If he grows older and finds he doesn't appreciate it, he can always go by James. Good Luck!
Reply:I agree with your hubby. Too close to ESPN. I really don't like the name and I wouldn't choose that for my kid but everyone is different.
Reply:I like the sound of Espen Beowulf for your son.
Reply:A bit of a strange one - makes me think 's' bend of when plumming (pipes and things),

perhaps use it for a middle name.

Go for Jamie Espen.
Reply:the name Espn spelled various ways has been on the rise since the invent of ESPN. that is where the name comes from, there is no other origin. it is very gimmicky (like naming a kid chevrolet or del monte). and no matter how much you claim otherwise, people will assume that you named the kid after the cable network. check out the links in the source section.

btw, i'm a sociology student conducting an anonymous study on marriage and children. check out http://geocities.com/sbiv37 to participate.
Reply:The first thing I thought of was ESPN
Reply:Yeah, I don't like it either. The first thing that came to my mind was the ESPN thing too.
Reply:I think ESPN is where it came from. There was a couple a while back that named their son Espn and pronounce is "Espen"

Im honestly not to fond of it. It feels like it is missing something.
