What do you think. Keep boys name Ari or make Ari a nickname for another name?

I really like the boys name Ari (pronounced AH-ree, Hebrew for Lion) but wonder if I should have that be a nickname for a longer, more formal sounding name, such as Ariston (pronounced AH-riss-ton, a Greek name derived from the word aristos, meaning "excellence.")

What do you think, and can you think of a better formal name for Ari than Ariston? (Please don't say Aristotle or Ariel, as those are obviously not possibilities)

Thanks!!

Ari is great on its own, but it's never a bad thing to offer a child some options. ;) So if torn, I'd likely consider a few longer names Ari could be a nickname for.

Ariston is a good option, but you might also consider something like ...

Areli (ay-REE-lie)

Azariah

Azarias

Zechariah

Zacharias

All sticking with Ari's Hebrew roots ;)

Or pretty much any name beginning with Ar- or containing the A and R sounds or literal "ari" blend ...

Aaron

Aramis

Ardal

Arden

Arlen

Argus

Arrigo

Arthur

Arturo

Asher

Darian

Darius

Ilario

Macario

Marino

Marinus

Mario

You get the idea. ;) And again, Ari alone is great! But if you're unsure about the abruptness or perceived informal nature, it can't hurt to use a longer version (still keeping Ari as a short form). ;)
Reply:Just Ari
Reply:I like Ari personally
Reply:I like Ariston better. Ari for a boy sounds more like a girl name short for Arianna. idk... i know someone named arianna who actually goes by ari. but someone else just mentioned a name to me tht i thought was an adorable unique name for a boy: Archer Lyle. cute rite? :] also, if you go with ariston, for a middle name, try tate maybe... or james or kyler

Ariston Tate

Ariston James

Ariston Kyler
Reply:I like Ari just the way it is. Worked for Ari Fleischer, former White House Press Secretary.
Reply:how arian or arion?

my daughter is named arielle
Reply:I've actually always loved that name! Something about it is just cool. I like the more informal sounding Hebrew names. I also like the name (not sure how it's spelled) Ami, like Ami James from Miami Ink. Maybe Ari could be short for Arif. It means "knowledge" in Arabic. If you don't like that, then I think Ari will do just fine!
Reply:i love the name Ari. i have a friend w/ that name and its not short for anything. go for what will make u and ur family happy.
Reply:Yeah i also love that name.

strangely, i have met a few Ari's..

Ari

Archer (Ari)

Ariston

Aristian

Artrisan

i like Ari and Archer the best though.

good luck with your baby,.

i think you should choose Ariston or Archer because its more professional.

Ari is cuter as a close nickname
